Our History

Northwest Harmony Chorus (NWH) was founded by Kathleen Carroll, Verna Veysey and Phyllis Kelsay and chartered in 1997 with 25 members. We have competed in 23 of the 26 annual Regional Competitions and won 1st place overall Region in 2002 under the direction of Kathy Scheel. We performed on the Sweet Adelines International stage in 2003 in Phoenix, AZ with 25 members. At that time we were the smallest chorus to perform on International stage and we were proud of placing 36th in the World!!! In May 2023 we placed 6th out of 16 competing choruses at our Regional contest. We look forward to improving our sound and performance with coaching over this next year.

NWH currently has 30 members aging from 20 to 80 with varying professional and musical backgrounds. We love to sing for local audiences such as festivals, assisted living communities, parties and wine tastings. Members get together for fun and friendship and food is always a must! We all love to sing and harmonize – we are
always looking for new voices and friends to join us!

What is Barbershop?

Barbershop music originated in the late 19th century in the United States. It was a style of a cappella singing characterized by four-part harmonies, consisting of tenor, lead, baritone, and bass voices. The name “barbershop” comes from the tradition of men gathering in barbershops and harmonizing together.

In the early 20th century, barbershop music gained popularity and became a distinct genre. It was known for its tight harmonies, close vocal arrangements, and ringing chords. Barbershop quartets and choruses started forming, performing at local events, competitions, and on radio broadcasts.

Sweet Adelines International is a renowned organization that promotes barbershop harmony for women. It was founded in 1945 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Edna Mae Anderson. She aimed to provide women with opportunities to sing and enjoy the barbershop style. Sweet Adelines quickly gained traction, and the organization grew as more women embraced the art form.

Over the years, Sweet Adelines International has expanded globally, with thousands of members across different continents. The organization offers education, competitions, performance opportunities, and a supportive community for women interested in barbershop singing.

Today, both barbershop music and Sweet Adelines International thrive, captivating audiences with their enchanting harmonies and vibrant performances. They celebrate the joy of singing and continue to inspire countless individuals to explore the beauty of four-part harmony.
